When author Barbara Unković returned to live in Croatia, the home of her ancestors, she was captivated by the timeless web of Croatian characters and the ghost of D. H. Lawrence, enabling her to pen her first collection of short fiction.

Adriatic Blue is an anthology of 30 short stories from New Zealand to Croatia with some unexpected detours along the way such as the horrifying reality of the Balkan War; the haunting tale of Nadia’s life in a strange new land; Sally’s problem with her pernicious bush; the wicked seductress who wanted more and Helen who contends with her husband’s perverted desires.

Tales of substance and style about different people in different worlds. Funny, personal, sometimes shocking, but definitely different.

Barbara Unković was born in Whangarei, New Zealand, the daughter of a Croatian father and an English mother. She is in fact, D. H. Lawrence’s third cousin. Barbara lives in Račišće, a small fishing village of 200 people on the island of Korčula in Croatia, the original home of her father’s family. Her lifestyle in Croatia is very simple and revolves around the land and the seasons. She and her husband grow all their own vegetables as well as herbs, flowers, olives and grapes. Once a year they press the olives and grapes to produce their own olive oil and wine. She also enjoys hand making olive oil soap, drying herbs to make tea, baking bread and cooking various traditional Croatian dishes using their home grown organic produce. This way of life enables Barbara to have the freedom to write, exploring her imagination and extending her creativity. In addition to her short stories which have been published by More.com in the USA, she has also been published in the UK. Her most notable pieces being ‘The Voice’, which was the winner of the Writer’s Bill Board competition in February 2010 for Flash Fiction; ‘The Flourish’ which won in March 2010; ‘Psycho’ which placed second in the Global Short Stories for January 2010 competition; ‘Nadia’ winner of Writer's Bill Board UK Short Fiction competition for May 2010 and most recently ‘The Bookworm’ which was the winner of Writer's Bill Board Flash Fiction competition in August 2010.

I really enjoyed Barbara's writing. She has a very good eye and a sharp, witty writing style. This is a perfect 'go anywhere' book. My copy of Adriatic Blue has taken up residence in my car so I can enjoy an entertaining few minutes of escapism between appointments. Hopefully we'll see another collection soon. gshanks

A thoroughly entertaining and perceptive collection of stories. Richly descriptive and evocative with an unusually personal feel. A very good read. sj

This collection of short stories by Croatian-based writer Barbara Unkovic contains some real gems.
Barbara, who has enjoyed previous successes in the Global Short Story Competition, has put together a selection of stories ranging from the comic to the tragic.
However, she is undoubtedly at her best when dealing with stories of betrayal within families or friendships, when she is dealing with strong emotions and the powerful forces that they create.
For me, that is when Barbara's writing really comes alive and is at its finest.
